당시 산내 골령골 살해장소에서는 미 극동군사령부 주한연락사무소(Korean Liaison Office, 이하 KLO)의 총책임자 애버트(Abbott) 소령이 미군의 라이카(Leica) 사진기로 당시 장면을 찍었다. 그리고 주한미국대사관 소속 육군무관 에드워드(Bob E, Edwards) 중령은 1950년 9월 23일 워싱턴의 미 육군 정보부(Army intelligencein Wahington)로 ｢한국에서의 정치범 처형｣이라는 제목의 보고문(A-1)을 현장 사진 18장과 함께 보냈다. 이 보고문의 주요 내용은 다음과 같다. 

 

“북한의 라디오에서는 최근 남한에서의 잔혹성과 집단학살에 대한 의문제기가 있었다. 비록 라디오에서 상당 부분 과장되었다 하더라도, 전쟁 발발 후 남한 경찰은 집단적인 학살을 자행해 온 것이 사실이다. 서울이 북한군에 의해 함락되었을 당시 형무소에서는 수천 명의 재소자들이 풀려난 것으로 보고되었다. 서울이 함락되고 난 후, 형무소의 재소자들이 북한군에 의해 석방될 가능성을 방지하고자 수천 명의 정치범들을 몇 주 동안 처형(execution)한 것으로 우리는 믿고 있다. 학살이 전방 지역에서만 일어난 것이 아닌 점을 볼 때, 이러한 처형명령은 의심의 여지없이 최고위층(top level)에서 내려온 것이다.… 대전에서의 1,800여명의 정치범 집단학살은 3일 간에 걸쳐 이루어졌으며, 1950년 7월 첫째 주에 자행되었다. 사진들은 미 극동군사령부 KLO(Liaison Officer, GHQ, FEC) 애버트(Abbott) 소령이 라이카 사진기로 찍고, 미 육군 무관부원이 현상과 인화를 했다.”

 

 

 

SUBJECT: Execution of Political Prisoners in Korea.

SUMMARY: Pictures of execution of approximately 1,800 political prisoners in TAEJON.

 

The North Korean radio has recently made many claims about brutality and mass executions in South Korea. Although claims are probably exaggerated there have been some rather bloody executions by South Korea Police since war started. It is reported that when seoul felt to North Koreas they released thousands of prisoners from jails. It is the belief of the Army Attache that thousands of political prisoners were executed within few weeks after fall of Seoul to prevent their possible release by advancing enemy troops. Orders for execution undoubtedly came from top level as they were not confined to towns in front line areas.

 

It is the belief of the Army Attache that execution of Prisoners of War by ROK troops have been confined to "on the spot" Jobs by front line troops, and that general treatment of Prisoners of War after evacuation from front has been good.

 

Execution of 1800(one thousand eight hundred) political prisoners at TAEJON, requiring three days, took place during First week in July 1950.
